Ranting about Writing or What Causes Writing Catatonia

Writing web content is an art form. You need to have a certain degree of talent to write engaging and effective content that will interest your audience.

However, writing web content is also skill that can be learned. And like all skills that you've learned, you can easily unlearn web content writing. You can lose your groove, your rhythm, and, eventually, your confidence.

A writer needs to write consistently, with regularity, in order to sharpen and improve his craft. If you will not make it a habit to put your thoughts into a coherent composition, then you will easily fall into the abyss of what I call, writing catatonia.

People say that writers are moody; that they need a muse or an inspiration to get the words flowing. Most writers often nurture this impression. In fact, they cultivate such idea because of a mistaken notion that inspiration is the driving force that propels the creative spirit of every artist.

Writers are artists, there is no debate about that. But you don't need a magical muse to be able to write. Writers who cling to the idea of the "inspiration" are filled with hubris. They think they are artists, ergo, they need a muse. Without a muse, they will not write. This, I call BS.

Mistaking your writing catatonia as an artistic plateau will lead you to an insurmountable abyss of unproductivity.

Sheer laziness, or more specifically, mental laziness is the main reason why writers can't write. A writer's unwillingness to think in an organized fashion will stop him from writing. His laziness to do research, to read other authors, and to form an opinion, are the things that cause writing paralysis.

Distraction is also a big obstacle that all writers must overcome. They might be preoccupied with other things, they could be distracted by mundane everyday chores, they could be suffering from depression, or maybe, suffering from social network addiction. In worst cases, they could succumb to porn-surfing.

Whatever the reason is, you can not blame lack of "inspiration" for your unproductivity. That is because the world is full of inspiring things. The smallest things in our everyday lives could be used as sources of inspiration. All you need to do is to write these things down. Form words, sentences, and paragraphs. And give meaning to the things and events that surround you.

Wanbol University Disowns Tito Sotto

Wanbol University disowned Sen Tito Sotto, a.k.a Tito Escalera for plagiarizing his speeches in the Philippine Senate. This piece of news was confirmed in an open letter from Wanbol and signed by a certain George Tapia, the vice president for Alumni Relations and apparently, the long lost grandson of Miss Tapia -- the famed professor of Mr. Escalera/Sotto. A copy of the said letter is published below:

Breaking Promises

Breaking a promise leaves a bad taste in the mouth. But there is something about a promise that makes us want to break it. I bet everyone has broken a promise at least once in their lives.

Three days ago I made a promise to write at least 100 words a day on this blog. Yesterday, I broke that promise. And it left a very unsavory feeling inside me.

I remember a Danish proverb about eggs and promises. It says that both are easy to break. Hannah Arendt once said that making promises is a uniquely human act. It allows us to order our future.

Unfortunately, humans are supposedly predisposed to break a promise. Take it from the great author and humanist Mark Twain. Somewhere in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, he contemplated about this uniquely human flaw: that when someone promised not to do a thing, it is actually the surest way for that someone to do that thing.

Well, enough of promises. I guess we just have to stop making them and start doing what we ought to do.

Writing to Satisfy

There are times when the urge to write may feel like an itch on the groin that demands scratching.

It must be scratched – whenever, wherever. The urge must be satisfied.

Sometimes, the act of writing may seem primal; a kind of aphrodisiac that brings satisfaction to the senses.

And after everything in the mind has been said and written, the writer will lay spent, exhausted even. But the exhaustion would be tantalizing. It approximates the consumation of an orgasmic event.

Well, these may seem too exaggerated. Thoughts that are products only of a naughty imagination.

But they are real. The feelings can be felt. The urge quenched. But not quite, because after a while, a new arousal will emerge. It will demand attention. And it must be satisfied…

Surviving the Revolution - An Essay on Digital Revolution

Surviving the revolution. This is foremost in everyone's mind when talking about the issue of digital revolution. Like every revolution, the digital upheaval ushers in tremendous impact on society. Socio-politico and cultural changes have emerged and affected every fabric of the global community. Old practices and ideas have been discarded and new norms, some constructive and some are not, are being adapted at a mind-boggling rapid pace. The mantra of today is information high-technology. Either you jump in or you fizzle out.

Uyayi ng Himagsik by George T. Calaor

UPDATE:  George T. Calaor's first book of poetry, Uyayi ng Himagsik, is now available in several formats and ebook shops.  Here are your options:

1. Print Edition at Lulu (Perfect Bound Paperback, B/W): BUY THE BOOK HERE
2. Uyayi ng Himagsik at Smashwords
3. Uyayi ng Himagsik at Barnes and Noble
4. Uyayi ng Himagsik at Sony Reader Store

My friend, George, recently published his first book of poetry, Uyayi ng Himagsik.  It was a compilation of his most militant poems about the "struggle of the Filipino masses for freedom and democracy."
Clearly, it was a revolutionary book.  I will write a comprehensive review on Uyayi ng Himagsik and will publish it here. (See the first chapter review, Paghehele ng Isang Makata: Pagsusuri sa Uyayi ng Himagsik)

Forced Haircut in Schools is Corporal Punishment

Forced Haircut in Schools is Corporal Punishment
(Why This Policy Is Unjust and Violates Basic Child Rights)

Valencia City, BUKIDNON.  The Department of Education (DepEd) has a long-standing policy that governs good grooming. This includes prescribing a so-called proper haircut for male pupils in both private and public schools.  According to Undersecretary Yolanda Quijano, “the prescribed haircut for boys is at least one inch above the ear and three inches above the collar line.” Schools under the supervision of DepEd are required to follow such standard.

Unfortunately, this “haircut policy” has no clear implementing guidelines.  As a general practice, school principals and administrators have the authority to define their own sets of rules on how to implement the policy, including the enforcement of disciplinary actions on erring pupils.
